She rolled as another wave broke across her bow, turned her sideways as she descended the trough. The captain screamed orders to his crew, words which the relentless wind whipped out to the savage sea. Men scrambled, slipping and sliding across the wet, heaving deck. Aware of the consequences should a wave catch her broadside.
They crested the next wave at a forty-five-degree angle, a thunderous crack reverberated through the men’s souls. One final wave cast them into the depths. Horses released from the cargo hold swam to the small costal island they would one day call Wild Horse Island.

i loved how the horses seem like mythical creatures who could get safely to shore and inhabit an island and become a sanctuary for them, lovely story and such imagination!

Hey I hadn’t considered they were mythical! But I guess it does have that feel. Perhaps they conjured the storm to attain their freedom? I like how you think.

You could be writing about the Assateague ponies. Are you?

I did have them in the back of my mind, but apparently there is more than one island that credits a shipwreck with the reason horses inhabit the island. 🙂

Oh so lovely — I thought of the Assateague Island as well!! My boys and I read Misty and Misty’s Foal several years ago. Favorite stories of mine as a child, and now stories I’ve shared with my children. Thank you kindly for adding to our community this week — lovely story indeed ❤

Oh I am so glad you liked it. I remember reading Misty when was very young, I had almost forgotten that story. I am happy to be part of a group that has some very talented and inspiring writers.
