Life changed after Grandmama died. Papa, a quiet man, retreated further while I mourned. He signed Grandmama’s death certificate and handed me the apartment keys. I wouldn’t live there long.
I was twenty, and I knew Grandmama’s lessons on survival. The apartment, the jewels, the Boldini painting, they bore testament to a woman’s ability to live well.
Soldiers were marching into the city when I fled. I wouldn’t speak of those years again, although I thought of them daily. I kept the apartment and the secrets it held while the memories lived in my heart and the child I carried.

I loved your story and assumed it was a young woman fleeing Nazi occupying forces in Paris during WWII, but thank you kindly for adding the link to the story on Marthe de Florian! What a treat to read as I sit typing on my computer in the 9th arrondissement ❤ Thank you so much for sharing this lovely story and real-life connection! See you next week ❤

I remember reading about her story and the photo reminded me of it. How wonderful that you are sitting there as we speak. Some things are meant to be. 😊 Looking forward to next weeks prompt.

Yay! I’d never heard her story, but now I’m so intrigued! You’ve given me a whole new plot twist in my story — I’m giving it thought!! Are you writing for NaNoWriMo this year?

Oh good! You never know where inspiration will come from , do you? Yes I am attempting NaNo this year, slow going so far, but my schedule should open up after tomorrow. I assume you are?

I am!! And I agree — inspiration can come the most unlikely of places!! However, I’m not going to lie — when I found out we were coming to Paris in November, I’ve been thrilled to be inspired by everything in this gorgeous city!! Hosting tourists for centuries, this is a city steeped in history and stories!!! I never know where inspiration will come from either, but I’m burning the midnight oil here getting down the words ❤ I'd love to know how your story is coming!!

It sounds lovely. I adore Italy and I am hoping we can get back next year. Apparently Paris is good for writing. 😊 I am hoping to hit my stride this coming week. I hope you enjoy your trip.
