“Mary Poppins Returns” is being released in theaters today. To be honest, I didn’t care for the original “Mary Poppins” movie, you know the one with Julie Andrews? So, I am wondering if it I will like this new one. The books, however, I find enjoyable. P. L. Travers published a series of eight Mary Poppins books between 1934 to 1988. Fifty-four years is a long time to wait for a series.
Anyway, it occurred to me that most movies pale compared to the magic the author creates in a book. How many times have I heard the comment, “I saw the movie, but the book was better”? It is one more reason to read books and let your imagination soar with the words, let the author tell a story that transports you to another world.

Like you I enjoyed the book. Never saw the movie in full. Just snippets on you tube. Wrinkle in time was a disaster movie in my opinion. I hope the new movie is good.

Mary Poppins is slog. It’s just way too long. However a few of the scenes are so freaking magical that it has to go on the ‘must see’ list. But books are pretty much always better than movies. Return of the King might be the exception.

Oh, I love Tolkien. The series is what launched me into a love of the genre. I was underwhelmed by the movie adaptations. 😐📚 Books are better.

The CGI in RotK was a game changer. It was one of those gigantic leaps forward, so different that I simply sat there with my mouth open. But I agree, leaving out graphics, books are always better. In truth, I probably only watch 3 or 4 movies per year.

I have a hard time watching a movie, they don’t hold my attention, which is why I no longer go to the theater. I am like a little kid squirming in my seat, ready to leave. At home I do other things while a show is on. Someone suggested I should watch them at 2x speed. Haven’t tried it yet.

I really didn’t like the movie version of The DaVinci Code. Tom Hanks and whoever was the co-starring actress had zero chemistry. I’m not talking romance, just believability that they were working together.
I loved the book The Lovely Bones but the movie didn’t do the book justice. The movie was enthralling if you hadn’t read the book. I just didn’t like the creative approaches they took with some of the more poignant moments in the book.

I am hard pressed to think of any movie that I liked better than the book. Yes there are certainly movies that are wonderful and enthralling IF you haven’t read the book already. Normally if I watch a movie I like and find out there is a book, I grab a copy and read the book. Never fails. 😊📚

I have experience with teaching adults to read. I understand why many people prefer to watch a movie. Only good readers enjoy books better than movies. I realize that is a generalization but I think it is likely true. I like books better than movies. I do not care for audio books at all.

Oneta, you have a very valid point. There are plenty of people who for one reason or another prefer movies. I am happy they have a medium where they can consume the content. Each form has advantage and disadvantages. I wish movies were able to convey the same richness I find in the written word. 😊
