I have seen experts in their field. They know what they know. It is part of their DNA. But they are also prone to taking their knowledge for granted and they erroneously assume what they know is common knowledge. They assume there is nothing special or unique about their knowledge. It’s the old ‘familiarity breeds contempt’ adage.
It is true for writers as we take our knowledge base as common knowledge. If we can force ourselves to see the big picture, we may gain access to our unique perspective. But we still must overcome inertia. When we chase a new piece of knowledge, a spark replaces the inertia. The spark is infectious, it seeps into our writing and we write with excitement and emotion. Our reader becomes infused by our quest and the spark spreads.
What do you want to know?

An interesting concept. As a writer I don’t know much, as a reader I have read some.

I am sure you know more than you give yourself credit for.😊

I look at this quote from a different angle. It says, “write what you know”. So I learn new things, meet new people and go to new place. I read and learn so I will “know” more! There is no restriction upon you to have to “know” from personal experience. Wisdom is learning from the life and mistakes of others!!!

You are right. Learning and growing as a person and a writer should be the goal.

Great post! I say learn what you are curious about and care about and then you will “Know” more about something new.

Exactly. Learning new things is exciting and conveying what you “know” solidifies it in your mind. Glad you liked it,

I never liked “write what you know” because then you are limited. I pretty much depend on my imagination. 🙂
