For years, I associated ‘The Wizard of Oz’ with Halloween. The movie scared the bejesus out of me. I was probably too young. I have vivid memories of sneaking into the hallway and watching where my parents couldn’t see me. It was not my wisest decision. I paid the price, suffering nightmares of flying monkeys and the wicked witch chasing me along a yellow brick road. Even today, I avoid following Dorothy as she finds her way home.
Reading or viewing scary stories, horror tales, thrillers, and cozy mysteries are low on my priority list. Like a skeleton, I skip them because I don’t have the guts. They freak me out and I feel unsettled for days afterward. Studies say people who dislike scary movies never developed a deep association between fear and fun. Well, duh.
Maybe it is the reason behind my love-hate relationship with Halloween. Trick-or-treating for candy was entertaining, but hiding under my covers, and jumping at the slightest noise convinced there is an intruder in the house was not enjoyable. Then there are those cute kids in costumes.
How will you celebrate Halloween?

I must have been around 5 when I was taken to see The Wizard of Oz in a cinema. For nights afterwards I had nightmares about little people with weird voices jumping up and down on my bed.

Oo, Cathy, I am so sorry. That movie is creepy on so many levels. I hope you have a wonderful Halloween. 🎃

We’ll pour kerosene in a couple of pumpkins and torch them in the driveway. And then of course pass out the treats

It is snowing here today and several suburbs have rescheduled trick or treating until Saturday. We might need those blazing pumpkins to stay warm. 🔥🎃🔥

Love the witches shoes! Oh… I have always enjoyed the Wizard of Oz. I thought the flying monkeys at the end were the scariest.

The flying monkeys scared me. And the sand draining through the witch’s hourglass.
I like to watch scary movies on Hallowe’en and sneak treats from relatives’ baskets or my own. I think it would be fun to live with Hallowe’en in one’s heart the way Scrooge is supposed to have lived Christmas in his.
Happy All Saints’ and November!

Oh, I don’t like scary movies. But I will join in on sneaking a couple of treats from the candy basket. Wishing you a wonderful November. 😊
