My workload has doubled since my unscheduled vacation, and I am scrambling. While everyone feigns compassion, and profess their relief that I am well, the truth is they are anxiously waiting for me to deliver my assignments. “How soon?” is the implied question. With the pressure, it is easy to consider finishing the job for the most annoying person first. The trouble with this tactic is it means I fall further behind on my high-priority projects.
Finding the desire and focus to deal with the never-ending stack of work is daunting. I can’t count on magical unicorns, fairies, or helpful shoemaker elves. When I don’t know where to start, I clean my desk. It sounds counter-intuitive, but this simple task allows me to identify, organize, prioritize, and reschedule the tasks demanding completion. I block schedule, setting my agenda with specific times, and goals.
It is a ritual I have used often. Instead of wasting precious moments staring at a blank document, second-guessing whether I am working on the right assignment, or feeling guilty for never getting around to my passion project, I am free to work. The plan grants me the ability to concentrate. With a set objective and an established timeframe, my motivation helps me power through the piles, without losing sight of what is important.
How do you tackle mountains of responsibilities?

Figuring out which job to do first is never easy. As a child, I was told to do the most difficult job first, then everything becomes easier. I still tend to do this, for I always respond well to the bigger challenge!

Yes it is a difficult balance. I sometimes work on the harder stuff and take breaks when I crank out the easier jobs. I do love a challenge.

Making a To Do List… once it is written down… I can tackle it how I want. Sometimes when we see the list it is not as bad as we thought and by getting a bunch of little things done, we feel we made an accomplished and are ready to tackle the BIG project.

Yes Our minds are good a tricking us. Some jobs are easier than we imagined to finish. The hard part was getting started in the first place. 👍❤

Exactly – I always THINK I have more than I do, and I get so stressed. BUT when I write it down and FORCE myself to tackle it, 80% of stress goes away and I FEEL like a Champion! 🙂

I do a little bit of each responsibility, unless I get on a roll once into one. If need be, I spread them out, according to time and of course deadline. If I feel stuck or panicked, I breathe then pick up something.
I’m sure your process is astute, as is your sense of organization. I’m sorry for so many things encroaching, even if they are good things. Some breathing, if not breathing room, should help.

The order of the day seems to be “Nose to the Grindstone.” “Full speed ahead” “Damn the Torpedoes” “Keep a Stiff Upper Lip” and all that other rot. I am channeling my inner Winston today, and he says, “When you are going through Hell – Keep Going!” 🙂
I have no fear. Everything will get better. Thanks for your support, Christopher. 🙏
