The world is full of successful people with little talent, and talented people with little success. We can find countless reasons, attribute good luck, bad luck, and timing. But as Mr. Cobbett suggests, the difference may boil down to perseverance. We must find the ability to go to work every day, day after day, fixating on details, drilling on the basics, creating a plan, and working the plan.

Everyone sees the glory of success. They overlook the boring, the tedious, the drudgery, the late nights, the early mornings, and countless decisions over minuscule details. Unfortunately, success does not come with a guaranteed arrival date. Perseverance keeps us on task in the face of difficulties and uncertainty. It keeps us striving when things look bleak, and when we fear we may never attain our goals.

  3. resonates with me – particularly at this time. I am reading Master and Magarita and Bulgakov burnt his own manuscript just like the master did and remained nameless for years. I also did some poetry analysis of Yeats, he was the champion of perseverance, he is my fave poet for many reasons (mystical, magical realism) but I would be the first to say he was not overly talented but he honed his craft, edited, reworked and sometimes revisited poems from 20 years ago. We read today his labour of love. Well written points Jo.

    • They say talent is only a portion of the equation. It is the daily work, a willingness to learn, and checking your ego at the door that often serves us better. I had not heard of The Master and Margarita. Mikhail Bulgakov, and his work certainly have an interesting history. I will have to see if I can find a copy. 👍
