Today is Day 274 of the 2019 Daily Writing Challenge.

Did you write yesterday? Let us know your Day 273 word count in the comments.

———————

What is the 2019 Daily Writing Challenge? It is simple: Write something every day.

Write a little, write a lot. Just write. You have all day.

It doesn’t matter if you write 5 words, 5,000 words or something in between. The idea is to establish a daily writing habit. If you miss a day, don’t worry. Write today and report tomorrow on your success.

A great journey begins with one step. A great writing habit begins with one word. Go!

Check back tomorrow for the Day 274 Report and let us know how you did.

Exploring New Paths Toward Success – Daily Quote

if-you-want-to-succeed-you-should-strike-out-on-new-paths-rather-than-travel-the-worn-paths-of-accepted-success.-john-d.-rockefeller.

The path I am following has become a well-worn rut. My intuition is telling me, I need to up the ante. What was once difficult to compete, has now become a no-brainer. Over the last several months, I have taken my word count from an average of a hundred words to five hundred. That gives me about thirty-six hundred words per week. The start of a new month is a great reason to set a fresh intention.

Tomorrow, I am increasing my daily target. For seven days, I will shoot to write fifteen hundred words every day, or ten thousand words. It sounds like a lot. I am pushing myself for a few reasons. First, I have projects I want to move towards the finish line. My dream is to complete two short stories. Second, I am using it as a warmup exercise for NaNoWriMo. In November the goal is fifty thousand words for the month.

The most important incentive for completing the challenge is to boost my overall productivity. I love finding creative ways to drive myself to a higher level, and I make it a priority. Its time cuts a new route and venture into the unknown.

What challenges are you setting for yourself?

Remembering My Forgotten Man – Flash Fiction Challenge

Prompt: Write a story about someone unremembered.
Word count:  99 words

The best pieces were auctioned first. The hammer fell, the winning bidders paid, and scurried home clutching their new, old treasures. I stayed to the bitter end, bidding on lots no one else wanted. My prizes cost me a dollar, and the auctioneer tossed in other unsold items.

At home, I uncovered an antique trove. Pictures of a long-forgotten gentleman. My finger outlined his sepia-toned face, and I wondered about his life. Was he a good man? A brute? A devoted son? A cruel father? Whatever happened, the photos chronicled his lost legacy, unremembered, in my bargain auction finds.

The Price of Survival – 100 Word Wednesday

Word count: 100 words

It wasn’t glamorous, but desperate humans took any job to help pay for survival. Trey learned early when the day boss paid cash, he wasn’t paying you to ask questions. Today’s assignment promised a hefty bonus upon successful completion of eight hours spent sitting in a black panel van. His instructions were to call to report any changes.

Trey watched a deserted alleyway, struggling to stay awake. A low-frequency hum made him twist in his seat as he tried to locate the source. It grew louder and shook the truck. Too late, he realized the alien abduction stories were true.

The Joy of A Pumpkin Spiced Autumn – Daily Quote

a-leaf-fluttered-in-through-the-window-this-morningas-if-supported-by-the-rays-of-the-sun-a-bird-settled-on-the-fire-escape-joy-in-the-task-of-coffee-joy-accompanied-me-as-i-walked.-anai.

The weather is rainy, and the evening air is chilly. While the trees haven’t shed their chlorophyll to reveal their brilliant foliage, leaf-peeping people will soon busy. The other season harbinger has hit the streets – Pumpkin Spice Lattes.

They make me laugh since there is no pumpkin in Pumpkin Spice. They should just call it Spiced Coffee. The seasonal seasonings typically include cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove, and allspice, or some combination. The other trick they play to create an olfactory illusion is to mix in the aroma of a browning butter and sugar mixture.

It turns out that we learn to recognize odors through associations. The traditional spices used to highlight the taste of pumpkin pie, link our memories to warm cozy fires, gatherings of family and friends, and the bounty of an autumn harvest.

They say eighty percent of flavor is smell. Maybe that is what I love about autumn, the perfume of leaves, a crackling fire, fresh-baked treats, spiced candles and my morning cup of hot, black coffee. It must be time to enjoy a brisk walk and maybe a Pumpkin Spiced sugar cookie.

What is your favorite part of fall?

Oppressed by smoke-filled lounges, pressured by incessant demands, and depressed by his dismal gray life, he sings of halcyon days when opportunities lay before him.

He clutches a faded photo, reliving wrong turns, what could have been, and love lost along the way.

After a lifetime spent running away, he croons, promising with the new dawn, a reborn man will stand tall to honor his legacy.

Less Than Expected – Weekend Writing Prompt

Title: Less Than Expected
Source:  Weekend Writing Prompt #125 – Ultimatum
Objective: Write a poem or piece of prose in exactly 62 words

Teresa lived in happiness, cultivated friends and fun until her father issued his ultimatum.

Straighten up, fly right, life is a serious business, he said. Walk the narrow path, focus on your goals, success lies in reaching your destination.

She complied, eliminating distractions until she sat alone, heartbroken in her hollow golden paradise and wept for the life, she might have known.

Finding Your Superhero Powers – Daily Quote

i-hate-first-drafts-and-it-never-gets-easier.-people-always-wonder-what-kind-of-superhero-power-theyd-like-to-have.-i-wanted-the-ability-for-someone-to-just-open-up-my-brain-and-take-out

I am struggling with my first draft. I read reports of authors churning out 5,000 or 10,000 words per day, and I wonder if a radioactive spider bit them. Perhaps they mastered time travel, allowing them the luxury of writing, and deleting sentences multiple times. Or maybe they’ve found supercharged coffee beans. I need them in my coffeepot.

Studying successful authors, searching for clues, I discovered a plethora of tricks used to create what some describe as a “vomit” draft. Some locked themselves in hotel rooms, or garden sheds, or composed in their cars. Others, like Victor Hugo, Ernest Hemingway, and even Benjamin Franklin, wrote in the nude, with the idea that without clothes, there was nothing else they could do but write.

Writers have odd habits. We talk to ourselves, and our characters, we frequent baby name websites and please refrain from looking at our search history. I guarantee you don’t want to know. We eavesdrop on conversations in our home away from home, the coffee shop, then stare into space, oblivious of our surroundings. I ask Alexa for synonyms, or how to spell a simple word that refuses to appear on my screen. I am not above doing anything that will facilitate getting more words written faster.

What are your secret writing hacks?
