Pursuing Excellence on Lazy Summer Days – Daily Quote

reading-is-a-joy-for-my-kids-and-to-swing-in-a-hammock-on-a-lazy-summer-day-reading-a-good-book-just-goes-with-summer.-marcia-gay-harden

June proclaims a break in hard work. June demands we push the pause button and relax. School is out, signaling us trade backpacks for beach bags, and parkas for sunscreen. As we shake off the rigors of schedules, we look forward. The best way to unwind is with a good book. “Wait,” you say. “I just closed the books on required reading why would I pick up a novel?”

The reason is summer reading allows us the freedom to choose. Research shows pleasure reading creates positive emotional and social consequences. Self-directed reading increases empathy and reduces stress more than activities like taking a walk or listening to music. The key is to have fun. Whether you read alone or share with friends, family or your favorite book club, pick what interests you, or a genre outside your comfort zone.

What are you reading this summer?

Defying Disapproval – 3 Line Tales

From Sonya’s 3LineTales at Only100Words.

Feeling liked I didn’t belong, I strengthened my defenses, embraced my differences and flaunted them before my critics.

I owned my label of the Black Sheep of the family.

But a black sheep is never alone, we gathered together and found unity, acceptance and our new relatives.

Memory Lane – 100 Word Wednesday

Title: Memory Lane

Word count: 100 words

I hadn’t been here in years. Mom said it was parked behind the barn, and I walked the path I had taken countless times as a kid. It felt strange to be home, and my past seemed surreal.

The band bus held fuzzy memories of endless road trips as we traveled from one gig to another. If we were lucky, they paid enough for gas to the next town, eating was optional. I wouldn’t change the hard times that honed our band’s unique sound and created a family. Music shaped my whole life and forged the musician standing here today.

Drawing Inspiration – Weekend Writing Prompt

Title: Drawing Inspiration
Source:  Weekend Writing Prompt #109 – Idyll
Objective: Write a poem or piece of prose in exactly 84 words.

Jason grew up in the city. His parents shuttled him from school to soccer practice, music lessons and extracurricular activities. He sat in the backseat and drew. Crayons, markers and pencil stubs littered his backpack. They chalked his drawings up to childish pursuits, but his third-grade art teacher had a different opinion.

As a professional artist, he moved to a rural idyll. He painted his surroundings, lush landscapes infused his work with an exuberance that propelled his career to heights he had never imagined.

Creating a Fantasy World for Words – Daily Quote

time-dissolves-in-summer-anyway_-days-are-long-weekends-longer.-hours-get-all-thin-and-watery-when-you-are-lost-in-the-book-youd-never-otherwise-have-time-to-read.-senses-are-sharper-som.

There is a wonderful picture painted in these words. I can conjure images of a cool misty morning sitting on a boat deck. The day’s possibilities point toward infinity while birds sing their early morning songs. Sitting at my side I have a good book, my morning cup of coffee and a fresh fruit plate. Water splashes against the boat’s hull and adds to the symphony accompanying the words I am reading.

Where do you like to read?

Free Falling – Thursday Threads

Photo by Web Donut on Unsplash

Joe knew how to fly. His daddy had zoomed his infant son through the air, a sure-fire tactic to transform cries into peals of laughter.

On his fifth birthday, his uncle gave him a bicycle, and Joe discovered the joy of the wind in his hair. He spent every available hour outside burning around the cul-de-sac. It wasn’t long before the training wheels came off and Joe was in search of bigger thrills.

Bike tricks, wheelies, and stoppies were followed by plywood ramps. An upgrade to a motorbike provided powered flights into big air. There were crashes that demanded trips to the hospital where he collected plaster casts, splints, and stitches. He wore bruises with pride, badges of courage and testimony of a new skill attempted and mastered.

“Why can’t you keep your wheels on the ground?” his mother asked.

“Well, that’d be no fun,” Joe answered with a smile and a wink.

“I love the acceleration, the sensation of a rocket launch into space. Each jump lets me leave this world for a while. Time slows as the bike and I float in thin air. For a split-second, everything stops. The world’s demands fall away, and I am free.” Joe paused, eyes closed, joy painted his face and touched his mother’s heart.

“Pain doesn’t exist, misery is suspended, and life has meaning. Then I’m free falling. I return to earth knowing I bring a piece of that feeling with me.”

His mother ruffled his hair and hugged him tightly.

Go Slow to Go Fast – Daily Quote

one-of-the-best-pieces-of-advice-i-ever-got-was-from-a-horse-master.-he-told-me-to-go-slow-to-go-fast.-i-think-that-applies-to-everything-in-life.-we-live-as-though-there-arent-enough-ho

Change is difficult. We find the latest technology, the newest app to simplify our lives, or an improved device to increase our productivity. We run faster and faster trying to keep pace with the bleeding edge. We grasp at soft data, opinions, and conjecture. It is simpler to accept marketing claims and easy answers. Decisions made by the seat of our pants may have long-term consequences. Supposed perfect solutions encourage us to ignore facts. Comfortable beliefs are easier to trust than complex concepts or challenging situations and the results can be disastrous.

As counterintuitive as it sounds, there are benefits to slowing down. It allows us to check data, verify statistics, assess our needs and determine if we are moving in the right direction. When we allow ourselves space to entertain new ideas and envision improvements we construct a vision of our future. Some of the best stories, great insights, and breakthroughs come when we give ourselves time to think. Thoughtful reflections of our options, application of logic based on facts, gives us confidence in our decisions. We don’t have to second guess our choices and that reduces our stress. Courageous and self-assured we can zoom into the future.

Would one of your projects benefit from slowing down?
