The ferryman’s pole sunk deep in the mire beneath the water’s calm surface and the boat slid silently onward.
I leaned into freezing fingers of mist as they caressed my flayed flesh as welcoming as a lover’s touch.
Silence beat upon my soul forcing a single tear from my bloodshot eye.

this one just has me wrapped and pulled into my element, the sight of the boatman and tortured body clinging on to its soul – you are so very poetic in this one Jo, there’s a poet in that body somewhere.

Ha. I love to read poetry, but writing it… that is a different matter. Counting syllables and lines and the whole rhyming thing is too much like torture for me. 😱 Still I am glad you liked the lines here. 😊

it can be when we have to stick to rhyme and meter, but oddly it has helped me write better prose. choosing words and having a flow of thought. i did like your three line tales, the beauty of flash is when it flows so effortlessly like this but there is this huge story going on behind the scenes.

I agree strictures on writing makes you consider word selection and embedded meanings which only serves to make the piece stronger. Conveying a story that touches the reader on several layers is what poetry does so well. It is what I like about your work.

I love how the story depends on the title, so contextual and entrancing!
