Mael confronted the Rock, hands on his hips, legs rooted to the ground, his decision made. Here he would forge his fated destiny.

“This is where I build my castle.”

His men gasped. An incredulous murmur rose.  The volume ascended, scaling the sheer obsidian cliff face until it drowned the sound of the relentless, crashing surf.

“Surely, he jests.”

“He can’t be serious?”

“No one dares to build upon Devil’s Bite Mountain.”

Mael spun, his rippling black cloak snapping in the wind, and his troops stood, quivering in the silence. Mael’s gaze impaled the solider who had dared to utter his last fateful thought.

His defiant roar shook the dark heavens, and his imperious words left no questions. His will would be obeyed.

  1. a leader must stand by his convictions, it can be so daunting when majority are against you. your tale brings to mind James Clavell’s Taipan, who built upon the rock now known as Hong Kong.

    • I hadn’t thought about that, Gina. There is a bible verse that says “That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church.” I makes me wonder how many more leaders have “Built on a Rock” You always get me thinking.

      • that phrase built on a rock carries so many different translations, while a rock could mean strong and stable it is also unsuitable ground, yet it is solid lie a rock, my mind goes over it many times and also the bible quote I learnt from young always seemed to confuse me a little. Peter was not the most suitable choice but he was strong like a rock maybe?? I love the way you present thoughts Jo.
