The 2021 Daily Writing Challenge – March 14

2021-daily-writing-challenge

Saturday marks the weekly binge to complete all the requisite-do tasks that didn’t get done during the week. The day started early, ended late, and resulted in an exhausted but exhilarating sense of accomplishment. There are two benefits to writing your To-Dos on paper. The first is the joy of shredding a completed sheet. The second is the kick in the pants you receive when you must re-write an uncompleted item on a clean page.

One onerous thorn had been lingering on my job chart for months. Words cannot describe the displeasure and resentment I felt each week as I re-wrote the same sentence on list, after list, after list. Sick and tired of the same annoying task, I dug in, enlisted the help I needed, and finished the project. Hurrah.

I have put the most important tasks to bed, dispensed with the maintenance chores, and vanquished a handful of minor annoyances. A rewarding day was crowned with my ability to spend an hour working on my WIP brain dump.

No matter the challenges and the obstacles blocking my way, I maintain the item at the top of my list as a non-negotiable. Yesterday I wrote 519 (countable) words.

Called – Weekend Writing Prompt

Crowded highways gave way to rural roads, and she walked onward. Roads became dirt trails, and then a narrow path nobody followed. The vista beckoned, and she walked onward.

Do Not Disturb, and the Quest for Your Perfect Creative Space — Daily Quote

ive-found-i-get-big-things-done-when-im-on-airplanes-or-in-hotel-rooms.-its-a-total-needle-mover-to-book-a-fantastic-room-in-a-place-you-adore-and-then-put-the-do-not-disturb-on-the-phon

I don’t remember when I last booked a hotel suite, checked in, and focused on my work for an entire weekend. Working in a fantastic location with a commanding view, 24-hour room service, and inspiration galore for a full seven days has never happened. Boy, if I felt self-indulgent, I could entertain my fantasy of directing all my focus, energy, and dedication to a project that was only important to me. Imagine the word count I could accumulate.

It is a dream of many of us artistic types. What masterpieces would we create with a week free from life’s demands, a dedicated space, and zero interruptions? We require a magnificent venue, inspiring music, our favorite pen, a lucky vision board, and a host of other talismans to set the stage. Perhaps if the planets assumed a favorable alignment well, I would exhaust my list of excuses of why I’m not writing. Life is messy. Challenges multiply whenever you decide to attempt something novel, and waiting for perfection before we take action, is a delay tactic.

There is nothing wrong with where you are today, doing what you can to accomplish one small step forward amid your daily pressures. I created my Do Not Disturb sign and hung it for all to see. I have no illusions I will experience countless hours of solitude or needle-moving progress. But with a bit of luck and solid determination, I plan on accomplishing big things. Who knows, I might even write a book.

What are you doing today to move the needle?

The 2021 Daily Writing Challenge – March 13

2021-daily-writing-challenge

By Friday, I’m exhausted and looking to vent a little steam. Pizza night, family fun time, a glass of Chianti, and I am ready for bed. I need a decent night’s rest because I have an action-packed weekend plan, and my Do Not Disturb sign is on standby, waiting for my cue. Thoughts, storylines, character motivations, and potential new cast members have bombarded my brain the entire week. They are devious, and they assault me when I have no easy method to record their brilliance.

I balance on a tightrope with some of these personalities. Some are content to wait their turn. Others demand I stop everything and jot down their words or, they threaten, they will walk off the project. I am afraid I have already lost some exquisite ideas to the great black void because I was too slow to take proper notes. I intend to beg for forgiveness, lean on the generosity of their good graces, and promise them a leading role in a spin-off series if they remind me of what I have forgotten. Besides, I’m a weak human whose body requires a few hours of sleep. I’ll let you know if the tactic works.

No matter the challenges and the obstacles blocking my way, I maintain the item at the top of my list as a non-negotiable. Yesterday I wrote 434 (countable) words.

Celebrate Friday Night with Your Favorite Pizza — Daily Quote

friday-is-my-second-favorite-f-word.-food-is-my-first.-anonymous

Nothing goes better with Friday than pizza. Friday night pizza is a tradition that goes back longer than I can remember. Everyone has their favorite toppings, crust thicknesses, preferred sauce, and opinions on the best pizza joint in the country. Some concoctions range from bizarre to interesting, while others tip the scale at horrifyingly disgusting. I love watching people dig in and seeing the expressions their first bite of bliss evokes. It always makes me smile.

My tastes run towards the from-scratch, homemade and simple. Forget the bells and whistles, exotic ingredients, and anything other than a fresh tomato sauce. My dough is AP flour, a little yeast, a touch of sugar, a pinch of salt, a drizzle of EVOO, and water. The dough is mixed and pressed into a thin layer. The sauce of tomatoes, seasonings, and a gurgle of more olive oil, I puree in the blender and apply it judiciously to the crust. The next layer is fresh buffalo mozzarella. I add a generous handful of basil and pop it into a hot oven for a few blistering moments.

The house smells amazing, my stomach growls in anticipation, and I can’t wait for it to cool. I can’t see my expression when I can finally get a piece stuffed into my mouth, but I know I look ridiculous.

What are your favorite pizza toppings?

Interruptions seem to rule my days. I wish there were a way to expect them. But if I could plan disruptions to my schedule, would they still be annoying distractions? When you gain an enviable reputation as a critical thinker, a problem solver, a helpful person, and you perform those tasks with a smile and without judgment, needy people knock on your door. Well, nobody visits. They send texts, emails, and when things are desperate, they call you at 11:30 at night. Please solve my problem.

I’m not complaining. We must learn to be kinder with one another and help ease burdens, suffering, anxiety, and feelings of being alone. My grandmother always said many hands make light work. It’s true. Facing a challenge is easier when you have a cheering squad rooting for you, applauding your achievements, and celebrating your victories, even when they are small.

Perhaps we can arrange support hours to exclude the part of my day when I’m not attempting to indulge my need for a couple of hours of sleep?

No matter the challenges and the obstacles blocking my way, I maintain the item at the top of my list as a non-negotiable. Yesterday I wrote 594 (countable) words.

Stripped of Expectations, Confronting Yourself, and Finding the Fire in Your Soul — Daily Quote

man-is-so-made-that-when-anything-fires-his-soul-impossibilities-vanish.-jean-de-la-fontaine.

February bombarded us with an overabundance of snow, freezing temperatures, pervasive gloom, and enough hardship to make anyone want to cave in, give up, and abandon all hope. Added to bleak despair, we suffered cabin fever under the burden of lockdowns, social distancing, and deprivation of human connections. Yet, when the superfluous is stripped away, we expose interesting hidden discoveries to daylight and sometimes uncomfortable examinations.

It is easy to forget who we really are. We become trapped by the roles we play. The labels we accept as a parent, spouse, dutiful daughter, loving son, friend, employee, entrepreneur, runner, teacher, lifelong learner, breadwinner, cook, philanthropist, reader – they all inflict a specific set of assumptions on us. We allow ourselves to get caught up being who we think we ought to be. We obsess over living up to other’s expectations and trying to achieve the ideal image portrayed by an empty facade. No one thing is a pure reflection of our true selves.

When the only soul left to speak with is you, what do you find? Is it the part of yourself you are afraid to see? Do you fear having to take responsibility for yourself and commit to making the changes you keep promising yourself? Or maybe you hide from the ferocious drooling monster lurking in deep dark recesses of your inner being. You know, the one who sabotages your every effort to connect with the greatness of the real you. Those are genuine possibilities. But you might uncover acceptance, compassion, understanding, and perhaps the forgiveness you have been searching for in all the wrong places. If you are honest with your core and daring enough to stare your demon in the eye, you may be lucky and discover your passion.

In “Reflections on the Art of Living,” Joseph Campbell writes, “Where you stumble, there lies your treasure. The very cave you are afraid to enter turns out to be the source of what you are looking for.”

What lights the fire in your soul?

The 2021 Daily Writing Challenge – March 11

2021-daily-writing-challenge

Yesterday the temperature soared to 68 degrees, and the wind howled, gusting to 50 mph. I was determined to spend time outdoors. The yard is a mess after having a dying Colorado Blue Spruce removed. To safely remove the 40-foot-tall tree, the crew used a large cutting tool and a heavy stump grinder that shredded the lawn. I found a bush with winter storm damage that needed pruning, a cache of clattering garbage swirling in a back corner, and proof of life.

Buried beneath the mounds of melting snow, daring to peak through the soggy mucky mulch lurked the first signs of spring. My annual countdown helps me bridge the gap from the dead of winter to the promise embodied in the change of seasons. Eight days and counting. Hope lifts my spirits, and I excitedly completed my seed order, contemplated purchasing plants for a garden extension, checked last frost dates, and used germination days to plan my indoor plantings. The area I use for my tiny seedlings is ready, and so am I.

Nurturing story ideas is like coaxing seeds to grow for your imagined summer vegetable and flower beds. The soil temperature, daily sunlight, and correct moisture levels all contribute to your success or failure. I also spent a half-hour with my WIP, tending to those seedling ideas and watching them develop.

No matter the challenges and the obstacles blocking my way, I maintain the item at the top of my list as a non-negotiable. Yesterday I wrote 397 (countable) words.

Subdue Chaos, Calm Your Anxiety, and Face Down Panic with Your Trusty List — Daily

i-make-lists-to-keep-my-anxiety-level-down.-if-i-write-down-15-things-to-be-done-i-lose-that-vague-nagging-sense-that-there-are-an-overwhelming-number-of-things-to-be-done-all-of-which-a

Chaos ensues, mayhem reigns, the timid cower beneath their desks, and I alone face the bombardment. Ok, maybe that’s a bit overdramatic, but then again, perhaps not. While we can’t always control what happens, we can determine our response. It is almost amusing when everyone is screaming, yelling, and running around in circles from sheer panic. I choose to step back, access the facts, weigh the gravity of the situation, consider my options, consult my procedures and protocol, make a decision, and act. Or not. I learned long ago, some events will sort themselves out without my involvement, while others demand swift and decisive action.

The necessity of a quick reaction is where planning, list-making, and employing a moment to think through different scenarios to their ultimate consequence comes into play. Moments like this are why I maintain daily schedules, weekly agendas, monthly forecasts, quarterly projections, and annual goals. Working through the process is excellent training for emergencies, and it helps to mitigate the number of catastrophes that occur.

Like Mary, the simple technique of creating a checklist of what needs to be done eases my anxiety and calms my mind. If I relied on my brain to remember every single one of the countless tasks, promises, and commitments I have made, I would become a blithering idiot. I can’t forget what I am supposed to be doing because I wrote it on a piece of paper. Now, where did I put my list?

Do you keep a To-Do list?

The 2021 Daily Writing Challenge – March 10

2021-daily-writing-challenge

Some days are runaway freight trains. The best you can do is activate the brakes, warn everyone of your situation, hang on, and hope nobody gets hurt. It’s a helpless feeling, watching the world whiz past, catching glimpses of astonished and outraged faces, while you smile serenely as if nothing out of the ordinary were happening, and wave. Meanwhile, under the surface, you are paddling like a whirligig in a tornado. When the train eventually comes to a clanking, lurching, shuddering stop, you breathe a sigh of relief and attempt to clean up the messy aftermath.

No matter the challenges and the obstacles blocking my way, I maintain the item at the top of my list as a non-negotiable. Yesterday I wrote 537 (countable) words.
