Now, when I think of her, I realize we danced on a precipice. The creature’s supple body, her distant eyes conspired to enthrall me. Her siren song consumed me. Blackened daylight seeped into desolate nights. My world did not exist.

The heavenly nightmare breaks, and I wake, yearning for a face I cannot remember.

It was decadent, self-indulgent, outrageous even. Jeannie dismissed the guilt. It wouldn’t spoil her alone time. The world could spin without her.

The coffee shop was empty this early Saturday morning. Baristas yawned and prepared for the coming onslaught. Jeannie gave her coffee a stir, a drip with double cream. She took a sip. Her eyes closed. Sunlight warmed her soul.

She didn’t need to consider the responsibilities, the endless tasks, the mad dashes to make appointments and deadlines. For this brief moment, she only needed to sit and drink her coffee.

The campaign was a success. Marius had defeated the crown’s enemy and annexed the disputed lands for the king.

His army marched toward home, eager to rejoin their families and return to more leisurely and peaceful pursuits. But the real war had not yet begun. They found their city occupied by Marius’s cousin, Atticus. He declared Marius a bastard and crowned himself lord of the Duchy.

“His denial of the truth will be his ruin,” Marius vowed.

“Charlatan,” she screamed.
