Lynn Abbey Quote on writing

Today writing is hard. Period. Wouldn’t matter if it was a novel, a short story, or a piece of flash fiction. Today writing my name is difficult and I know the solution. Do anything except write. Laundry, dishes, vacuuming, garbage, even cleaning the toilets make the list.

Well, I checked off three items stopping with the garbage. An idea yelled at me and I had to go write.

What do you do when the writing gets difficult?

Keep on writing.

  1. Interesting and thought provoking quote, Jo. In some ways I agree with it, but not in others. Pieces of flash do need carefully constructing – which can become frustrating, especially if a word limit is set. But a novel can be years of work. In my case, historical fiction requires many hours of thorough research long before the writing starts. But I do understand what the author of the quote is saying. First drafts of novels generally just enable thoughts to flow and the really hard work comes with the editing.

    • I know what you mean. For the Flash I write I spend as much if not more time in the editing phase especially if there is a word limit. I bet for a novel the time in edit is directly proportional, if not more. considering the length you need to keep continuity correct. 😊
