An Introverts Guide to Surviving Holiday Parties – Daily Quote

life-is-like-riding-a-bicycle.-to-keep-your-balance-you-must-keep-moving.-albert-einstein

Required holiday celebrations begin this weekend. My introverted nerves jangle as I brace myself for the marathon that ends New Year’s Day. Crowds make me uncomfortable. I prefer staying home in my comfy PJs, bunny slippers, and snuggling under a blanket with a book. Large parties suck the life from me, blending with normal people is a challenge, and small talk is an awkward ping pong match. Socializing and connecting with others good for me, but I struggle to balance interactions and fake smiles with the individuals I want to see.

Behind each event, is a frantic host who has spent countless hours and superhuman effort to ensure perfection. Honoring their work and surviving, means setting rules before I enter the venue. Pre-party, I arm myself with non-controversial, conversation-starting topics I can use when discussions lag. I move between groups before I run low on questions. I am not shy about using the bathroom or an outdoor terrace as my self-imposed time out zone. These quiet alcoves are excellent for a mini recharge. The added benefit is I discover other introverts lurking there. If I am lucky, we commiserate and share a laugh that makes the extroverts, who can’t stand to miss anything, approach us.

The keys to navigating sizable groups are to keep moving and having a “time to go” signal. It’s never acceptable to leave too early, but there is an optimum moment. I grab my coat, thank my host, and make a graceful exit.

How do you survive holiday parties?

How I Exercise to Quiet My Mind – Daily Quote

i-have-an-overactive-brain-and-as-a-result-of-that-i-can-really-get-in-my-own-mind.-so-i-like-to-try-and-exercise-it-to-the-point-of-exhaustion.-jake-gyllenhaaling

As an introvert, I spend hours in my head, but I am rarely alone. Not by a long shot. Novel characters appear with fascinating stories to tell while my muse whispers charming prose, and inspirational music plays in the background. I write in self-defense. Composing fiction is my exercise, a method of quieting the voices, and as I surrender to the writing process, I lose myself. Time travel is real. The tales transport me to different eras, unique and interesting lives, and singular universes.

Once, I believed the act of transcribing the narratives I hear would silence them. It hasn’t worked that way. Instead, it has generated additional protagonists with greater adventures, bigger demands, and they possess an unrelenting urgency for me to retell their epic sagas.

Writing is a true privilege that lets me connect with others in ways I could never imagine. It provides me an avenue to explore what other people might feel or experience, and it opens doors to conversations. Through writing, we discover like-minded individuals and gain the knowledge that we humans have many things in common.

How has writing changed your life?

Planning and Managing December Exhaustion – Daily Quote

im-a-junkie-for-exhaustion-and-im-a-junkie-for-setting-up-my-expectations-too-high-and-then-trying-to-meet-them.-stephen-colbert

December’s reputation is that it is the busiest month of the year. My calendar confirms the legitimacy of that claim. I am exhausted just contemplating my commitments. Multiple party invitations, friends wanting to meet for dinner, and shopping for perfect presents, create a dogpile on the list of tasks I want to complete before we bide goodbye to 2019. I also have the ongoing remodel, with endless decisions required to keep the project on track. I need a nap.

With added responsibilities and heightened expectations, I am including a few more items to my daily program.  I am taking care of myself to keep my energy at optimum levels. This includes rigorous adherence to getting enough sleep. I wasn’t kidding about the nap. They say the best results are relaxing for 10 to 30 minutes between 2 and 3 pm.

I have committed to observing my water intake, ensuring I am well hydrated. Monitoring alcohol consumption is likewise important as it can contribute to dehydration and feeling tired. I know it is easier said than done at many holiday gatherings, but it is worth leaning towards moderation. The last thing I am adding is a recommitment to my yoga practice as it helps me remain centered and calm.

How do you power through your December schedule?

Slogging Through the Mucky Middle – Daily Quote

success-isnt-always-about-greatness.-its-about-consistency.-consistent-hard-work-leads-to-success.-greatness-will-come.-dwayne-johnson.

Days, weeks, and sometimes months pass, and I feel like I am going nowhere. My feet are heavy, and I struggle to extract my boot from the mire. The mud releases it with a sucking pop. Poised, my foot dangles in midair, and I squelch the urge to run, knowing that desire will not yield the results I want. I fling it forward, transferring my weight as I drag my opposite leg to join its companion. I sink, settling into the muddy mess that marks my path. A misty rain falls, an annoyance, that is not strong enough to turn the quagmire into a rushing river and whisk me away. The constant drizzle only serves to hinder my progress.

I don’t possess enough courage to stop, the guts to admit defeat, or the backbone to beg for someone to rescue me. There is no shortcut here, only a dogged determination to keep working, keep trying, keep moving. This is where I do the work, write the stories, allow brilliant ideas to germinate, and I make plans. Everything looks dormant and dead. It is an illusion. I happily spend time here because this is where I create possibilities and earn promises of great rewards. A golden fist will knock on my door, and I will be prepared to answer.

How do you get through your mucky middles?

Finding Productivity in Sleepless Nights – Daily Quote

you-lie-awake-at-3-in-the-morning-thinking-of-story-ideas.-youre-online-at-8-a.m.-on-a-sunday-or-midnight-on-a-wednesday.-its-a-job-that-you-never-push-aside.-james-daly

On countless evenings, I find I cannot sleep. My brain won’t stop, it races, obsessively testing ideas, possibilities, and contemplating the question ‘what if?’ I have long since learned my lesson, there will be no rest. I relinquish my control, leave my bed, and write. Other nights, I am jolted from my dreams by some cosmic alarm clock. I clutch a brilliant idea like a lightsaber slashing through the dark. Once again, I stumble to my desk, powering on the laptop to transcribe the dream. The stories refuse to be pushed aside.

Telling tales is in my blood, and I schedule writing sessions every day, but I give myself a break from my normal routine on the days when my brain did not register it was quitting time.

Do you write at unusual times?

Coping with Unexpected Challenges – Daily Quote

i-like-to-work-fast.-i-despise-not-having-the-right-tool-or-worse-knowing-i-have-it-but-not-being-able-to-find-it.-its-a-pointless-delay-that-wrecks-my-pace-and-mood.-adam-savage.

I thrive in organized and systematic environments. I consider efficiency, speed, and precision, the main indicators of the ultimate success and satisfaction of every endeavor I undertake. Having the proper tool for the job is paramount. As a planner, my first step before launching a project is a well-conceived plan. I gather my supplies before I set to work. When everything is ready, the conductor steps to his podium raises his baton, and the music swells.

That is how I orchestrate my life under normal circumstances, but embarking on a complete house remodel, has complicated my everyday routine. My possessions have been packed and stored, and I am displaced, needing to live off-site for the duration. Nothing is in its familiar, assigned space.

Kitchen gadgets, once taken for granted, are not accessible. Doing laundry depends on the laundromat’s machine availability and requires an unfamiliar process. Simple tasks that once required only muscle memory to accomplish, now demand attention, thought, and extra time. While I expected obstacles, I was unprepared for the difficulties associated with the easy stuff.

How do you cope with unexpected challenges?

Sunday Afternoon Reboot – Daily Quote

this-is-sunday-and-the-question-arises-whatll-i-start-tomorrow_-kurt-vonnegu

Sunday is unlike any other day of the week, and it holds a special place in my heart. Wedged into the weekend’s end, it is a transition from fun-filled frivolity, to productive work. The Sunday following a long holiday weekend, leaves me anxious. Freedom, flexibly, lack of structure, and general flailing about without a set agenda wears on my need for an ordered schedule and measurable productivity. While others nap, play games, and indulge in binge-watching favorite shows, my fingers itch, my mind looks forward, and my body hums with a desire to act.

Thoughts turn toward possibilities. Rested and recharged I can’t wait to begin again. I pull out my planner, review the past week, assess where I stand, and plot my path. The start of a new month carries so much promise, and I front-load my week’s plans. The surging strength within me, demands direction. I devise a strategy to channel my intensity toward tackling difficult tasks, pushing a project across the finish line, or maybe, clearing the slate, and embarking on a fantastical endeavor.

The adage counsels us to “make hay while the sun shines.” I plan to take a huge bite from my task list while my energy is at its peak. The afternoon is perfect for setting the stage, so in the morning I can explode out of the gate.

How will you spend your Sunday?

The More Coffee Morning Mantra – Daily Quote

my-workday-begins-around-11-a.m.-with-a-cup-of-black-coffee-in-each-hand.-if-i-had-more-hands-there-would-be-more-coffee.-aaron-levie.

I can only dream of my workday beginning at 11 am. Unfortunately, my weekday schedule follows me into my weekend and sleeping late, means perhaps another hour of sleep, if I am lucky. It is pointless trying to return to the land of nod, once the sandman releases me from sweet slumber. No matter what the clock says, I cannot spring from my bed bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as they say. No. I force my eyes open and fumble for the wake-up juice.

After my first cup, I feel capable of extricating my brain from the primordial goo. Downing cup number two, rudimentary speech returns. My third cup renders me coherent enough to hold a non-demanding conversation. I don’t need to coffee to start my day, but the process isn’t pretty. I have scared small children and alienated family members when not properly caffeine kick-started into my fully functional humanoid disguise. They have learned their lessons, approaching with caution to press a steaming mug into my hand. They maintain a safe distance until the “More Coffee” mantra fades.

What is your morning ritual?

Taking Advantage of Quiet Hours – Daily Quote

i-start-every-morning-at-7-or-7_30-in-the-same-place-my-little-office-where-its-dark-and-cozy-with-a-cup-of-the-same-really-strong-black-coffee.-its-my-little-cocoon.-theres-no-phone-or

Rising early is not normally on my agenda, but it can offer untold rewards. Strong, hot coffee is imperative in my quest to chronicle the sunrise. I rise before dawn when the world is still dark, and before the birds break into song. If I lived on a farm, I would have to wake the rooster and remind him of his job. Together, we would watch the hard, black sky yield to gray, then fade to a pink touched with a golden glow, revealing the mist lifting from the field. A magic-infused breeze touches my coffee mug, and as I inhale, the promise stirs my soul.

Trance-like, I wander to my desk with the day’s music singing in my ear. My muse demands I transcribe her whispered stories. Transmitted through my fingertips to the hard, ebony squiggles etched on the ivory page, I don’t see black or white. I hear the song tinged in pink and golden hues. I taste the morning’s magical flavor, and the emotions vibrate, twirling intimately around the words as I sip my coffee.

How do you capture your day?

The Best Holiday of the Year – Daily Quote

What I love about Thanksgiving is that it's purely about getting together with friends or family and enjoying food. It's really for everybody, and it doesn't matter where you're from. Daniel Humma heading

I look forward to Thanksgiving every year. It is my favorite holiday because it offers something for everyone. Personally, I love The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and will let others indulge in the plethora of football games, turkey trots, and tv marathons. I wait with my basting spoon, for the annual turkey pardoning, a tradition that tickles my funny bone. And I am thrilled I don’t have to worry about buying presents for anyone. A warm house filled with wonderful aromas, cherished friends, and a loving family is a priceless gift.

Then there is the constant chaos of the kitchen party. As we prepare the food, we fill wine glasses without regard to the time. We sample the fixings and trade family secrets along with family recipes. In due course, dinner is served. There is nothing like a heaping plate full of creamy mashed potatoes, succulent turkey, stuffing, green beans, and homemade cranberry sauce swimming in a pool of delicious, brown, giblet gravy. Can anyone tell me why we only have gravy once a year?

The day is capped by a food coma induced nap, followed by more conversations and a strategic planning session for the upcoming holidays before everyone has to leave. For the next few days, I revel in my favorite leftovers and cement the memories so they will last a lifetime.

I wish you and your family a happy, and safe Thanksgiving.
