i-just-try-to-write-the-best-story-i-can-a-story-i-would-love-to-read-and-hope-that-readers-feel-the-same-jennifer-mcmahon

This is the time of year when stress runs high. There is one stress-free place, the time I set aside to write. Inhale deeply, close your eyes and on the exhale, let it all go.

Only the story remains, and the job at hand. Write the best story you can write today.

What story will you tell?

We are in for a wild ride. Strap on your life vests and hold on tight. Black Friday has arrived, and Cyber Monday is not far behind. I am pelted with ads proclaiming how much money I can save if I only buy now. Party season is in full force, and the desire to see dear friends and the obligation to attend events scheduled for the same date has reached manic proportions.

Somewhere in there is the need to carve out writing time. My list of odd places to compose a line or two is bordering on hilarious not to mention nauseating. Did I mention I easily become car sick?

The scene plays out with me, eyes closed, breathing deeply, and repeating the line over and over in my head until the wave of nausea passes. The car stops at a red light. I quickly type on my phone, hoping to get it all written before the car lurches forward with the green light. I close my eyes again, repeating the next section as we speed towards the next red light.

Rinse and repeat until we finally arrive at the party. I finish the passage in the driveway, gather the packages from the car and head inside. Everyone looks concerned and asks if I am okay. Oh yes, just fine, the passage is safely saved in my phone.

A loved one is fond of saying life is like a roller coaster. You can either get on and scream or you can sit back and enjoy the ride. Yippee Ki Yay!

Where are you squeezing in writing time?

when-everything-seems-to-be-going-against-you-remember-that-the-airplane-takes-off-against-the-wind-not-with-it-

Thanksgiving week signals the beginning of the busy holiday season. This year it surprised me, and I feel like I am woefully behind. The lists are getting longer, and the holiday commitments are filling the calendar. It is wonderful, exciting and exhausting.

And there are the stories demanding to be written.

Considering I am nose first in gale force winds, it seems all I need to do to attain lift, is jump.

How do you cope when life gets in the way of the things you want to do?

procrastination-for-creative-writers

What can I say? Today is one of those days. I took the advanced course on the art of napping. I scored at the top of my class.

However, I am terribly behind on workspace arrangement, and I had no idea I needed to find my perfect font.

If you will excuse me, I must run. I am desperate to fully develop my pre-writing rituals.

How do you procrastinate?

its-a-cliche-but-true-that-writing-is-intensely-solitary-and-at-times-really-lonely-i-sit-in-one-room-and-talk-to-squirrels-and-blue-jays-all-day-douglas-coupland

It snowed this weekend. It was beautiful. I started a fire in the fireplace, positioned my chair beside it, and I wrote. The crackle and pop of the logs was the only sound and I made progress writing my story.

In the rooms quiet, I heard a tapping at my window. My good friend Tufts the squirrel had ventured into the snow, looking for a tasty peanut. Luckily, there is a bag next to the door with her name on it. I tossed a handful to her. She nabbed a peanut, scampered to the maple tree, and perched on a low branch affording a great view of her snack table.

The neighborhood squirrels have developed finely tuned hearing. They know the sound of peanuts hitting the deck. Gordo, Little Guy, and Newbie arrived, chasing and vying with Tufts for a prize peanut. The joke was on them. Two blue jays swooped in, claiming the prize peanut. The squirrels watched the jays fly, peanuts clamped in their beaks and surveyed the bare ground. I swear they smiled as they donned their pitiful beggar faces, and in unison, turned to stare at the peanut dispenser in the window.

Who are your writing companions?

you-should-be-writing-the-doctor-and-rose

I needed inspiration, so I rang the Doctor. And who should appear, in the blue police box with Rose?

Of course, this is my favorite regeneration of the Doctor, but I am afraid he wasn’t much help, saying only that in an alternate universe I have already completed my 50,000 NaNo words and therefore I should be writing.

What should you be doing today?

Yup, we are entering the point in the month where “trying” doesn’t cut it. Do. Write words. Write badly. Write out of sequence. Write without thinking of anything else.

Words on the page = words you can edit next month = potential finished novel. But none of that matters right now. Right now, write.

What is your goal for today?

supernatural-dean-you-should-be-writing.

How freaky for Dean to show up. I don’t know about you, but he is always a bit scary. You just never know when some evil something-or-other has taken possession of his body and is bent on destruction.  When Dean says “write”, well you better believe I will be writing.

Except, I think today, I will forego the writing cabin in the woods. Cause this is Supernatural Dean and we all know nothing good ever happens in a secluded cabin in the woods.

Where will you be writing today?

heres-the-thing-the-book-that-will-most-chage-your-life-is-the-book-you-write-seth-godin

Day 15 of NaNoWriMo. Theoretically, by the end of today, you should have 25,000 words written of the 50,000 words due in yet another 15 days. Your book is half-way written Yikes! That’s a lot of words. But, if you have been trucking along day by day, you should be there. Right?

Well, I will admit, I am not there. There is this pesky thing called life that keeps getting in my way. But that will not stop me, I will keep trucking along even after November 30. There is a habit forming, and I think I like it. Writing this book is transforming my life.

Is your writing impacting your life?
