Nursing the Seeds of Success – Daily Quote

Working your land will change anybody's life. There's a proverb that says he who works his land will have abundance. You got to plow the ground. You got to plant the seed you got to water the seed and then you reap a harvest. Tim Story

There are farmers in my family. I have walked plowed fields, maneuver through rows of corn, and when I was a child, I cried when I hoed weeds. I still tend a garden, and while I no longer cry when I weed, it is work. The tasks are basic, prepare the soil, plant the seed at the correct depth, water and wait.

These next steps require patience. The dirt must be moist. Not too wet. Not too dry. Check daily, watch and wait. Seed germination times vary and their environment affects them. Is the ground warm enough? What is the air temperature? Depending on the seed variety, they can take a few days to several weeks to sprout. It is exciting when the cotyledon appears. Or is it another weed?  So, you wait for the first true leaves to appear, and you water. Water, weed, work the land. Pestilence may threaten your crops, sending cutworms, Japanese beetles, powdery mildew, blossom end rot, and weeds. Don’t forget to water.

It is a lengthy process with no guarantee of success.

Same goes for any goal you pursue. I check my garden every day, and I work my goals daily, trusting my efforts will have a delicious payoff.

What bounty will you reap?

Defying Desperation – Friday Fictioneers

The building stood, defying everything society condemned. Where others saw death, destruction, and decay, Julia envisioned a second chance. The ‘No Trespassing’ signs dared her. They issued a challenge to live against the grain, to celebrate her way of life. They called her to act.

Friends and family shook their heads. They tried to illustrate the benefits of conforming, of walking with the crowd. Their desperation confirmed deviating from her truth was not worth the price.

Determined to stand her ground, she made her vow.

She planted her visions in the cracks and waited for nature to take its course.

An Ancient Method of Technological Knowledge Transfer – Daily Quote

reading-is-a-technology-for-perspective-taking.-when-someone-elses-thoughts-are-in-your-head-you-are-observing-the-world-from-that-persons-vantage-point.-steven-pinker.

I recently came across a reference to “close reading”. Timothy Shanahan defines close reading as “intensive analysis of a text in order to come to terms with what it says, how it says it, and what it means.” Intrigued, I began a little research which led me down a rabbit hole of New Criticism, literary theory, American literary criticism, and reader-response theory.  It got me to thinking, which is what I believe is the point of reading, and by extension, writing solidifies thinking.

The concepts seemed natural as if someone had trained me in the processes while I was unaware. Reading more, I recalled my fifth-grade teacher instructing us on how to read for comprehension. In high school, an AP English teacher had us parse entire poems. We dissected each stanza into its components, identified them grammatically and wrote papers to explain the inflections and syntactical relationships used by the poet. Once finished, we wrote more papers on the same poems describing how they made us feel. It embedded those works in my memory.

When I read, I hear the author’s voice echoing in my head. Their thoughts and feelings expand my universe and touch my heart, forever changing who I am.

Does your reading change your perspective?

Red Hot Hope – 100 Word Wednesday

Jamie collapsed against the steering wheel, letting the diesel engine idled. Sweat poured down his neck, pooling under his hatband. AC vents blew hot air. Removing the ball cap, he tossed it on the metal cashbox on the seat next to him.

Yesterday he had reached the end of the road. He spent his last dollar to set up at the street fair. A scorcher, wrapped in humidity, fanned by the flaming grill, it was his only chance.

Exhausted, he knew he had done his best. The take was enough for tomorrow and Jamie breathed as the AC kicked in.

Befriending the Boogeyman – #MenageMonday

Stacy walked a fragile line. It was a precarious balance between her two worlds. Light and dark, right and wrong, battling for her soul.

She kept going, doing the work of living while she waited for the voices. Lights flashed, and a cop stepped from the squad car. She glanced into the shadows. She saw him lurking there, watching.

“What are you doing here?” the officer asked.

Stacy checked the darkness again but didn’t answer.

“Are you lost?” he tried again.

“Everything is black and white for you, isn’t it?” she asked.

“I only want to help you, my friend.”

“You’re not my buddy, cop. Hell, you’re acting like my father, and that isn’t a compliment.”

“Let’s get you home, somewhere safe,” he reached for her, touching her elbow.

“Safe? At home?” Stacy sniffed and twisted free from his grasp.

She felt the shadow figure smile, and she smiled in response. He was everywhere, always watching.

But he wasn’t the one she feared. He had threatened her for years and told her he would punish her if she did not behave. She lived in fear of making him angry and inflicting his punishment. She was small and delicate, and she bruised easily.

When she was nine, her mother died, a casualty of a stern hand too heavily applied. During the day, dark corners were her refuge, and the creature whispered secrets. He swore to protect her.

His white-gloved hand extended from his coal-black uniform.

Stacy hesitated, then descended into darkness.

Beating the Odds – Daily Quote

im-writing-a-book.-ive-got-the-page-numbers-done.-steven-wright

Writer Joseph Epstein is quoted as saying, “81 percent of Americans feel that they have a book in them — and should write it.” UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) estimates 2.2 million new titles are published worldwide each year. Nielsen BookScan reported in 2004 that of 1.2 million books tracked, only 25,000 — barely 2 percent — sold over 5,000 copies. Add the fact that writing a book is difficult.

Instead of deterring me, those facts are motivation. If it was easy, everyone would do it. I am far from complacent. I am determined to learn everything I can; I practice and create every day. I edit, re-write, entertain criticism, and re-write again. With each piece, I strive to get a little better. With the odds stacked against me, I use it as the fuel for my daily writing sessions. As I compose each story, more of my competition falls away. In my book, Steven Wright has made more progress than most of that 81% of wannabe writers. At least he got the page numbers done.

What odds will you beat?

Attention Bloggers and Writers – Small Victory

It has become my morning ritual over the last weeks to check and see how many of my posts have been reproduced without my permission.
(Try, every last one of them since February).

But I refuse to stop posting and wanted to believe that somehow, this situation would be remedied.

TYGPRESS.COM is not authorized to post content from this blog on their site

This morning I was greeted by this message:

Tygpress.com is temporarily out of service due to technical issues. will be back soon…
Tygpress.com was created with an intention to create a blog search site , but due to some techical issues, full contents of respective sites were being displayed instead of just excerpts as intended. We thank the complainants for bringing this issue to our notice and We are extremely sorry to the content owners.

I hope their “technical issues” continue. I will be checking back regularly.

And I will be much more vigilant in the future.

For now, I know that our Blogging Community does have an impact.

Thank you to everyone who took action.
