how-i-feel-when-i-write-a-plot-twist.-raccoon-evil-grin-wringing-hands

Life is good when I get to play the evil genius. Hahaha. You have no idea what I have in store for you my pretties.

Well, I am not really evil, somehow evil gets lost when he is looking for my house. Its like I have a jammer that blocks evil forces. And the whole genius thing? It is not a hotly debated topic here. Still, when a good plot twist comes along…

What surprises have shown up in your writing?

So, was last week exciting, fun, exhilarating? And now this week is a slog? Its kind of like boot camp. It is all fun and games at first and then, well, then it is not. The only way to get the word count is to keep writing. We must listen to Jean-Luc and make it so.

How are you managing this week?

the-human-brain-us-amazing-it-function-24/7-from-the-day-youre-born-and-only-stops-when-you-sit-down-to-do-some-writing

Monday morning mind melt-down, sigh. I have tricks to kick-start the process.

  1. Coffee, steamy hot and lots of it.
  2. Turn off all social media.
  3. Reread what I wrote yesterday and maybe doodle some additional ideas. But here it is… NO editing. That is a rabbit hole you don’t want to go down.
  4. Write something. It may come from the notes or a thought while doing the reread, but just starting is often enough to make words appear on the page.

What tricks do you use to kick-start your daily writing?

My muse didn’t show up yesterday. I spent the day typing gibberish, staring out of the window, and dosing at my desk. I finally had enough. So, channeling my inner Liam Neeson, I gave my muse a call and said:

“I don’t know where you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don’t have money, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for a muse like you. If you let the words appear on the page now that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you, but if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you and I will rip the story out of you.”

She showed up today ready to work.

Feel free to borrow and use as you may need.

write-a-bad-story-fix-it

I take exception to this quote as I don’t see the point in writing a bad story. If you are going to the trouble of writing you need to write a good story. You can fix bad writing. However, a story that is ill-conceived, not well thought out or lacking cohesiveness, well I suppose you could fix it, but that seems more work than it is worth. Not to mention it is a waste of writing time.

I will assume we all have fabulous story ideas and are spending this month writing a good story, badly.

What is your biggest stumbling block this month?

Now is not the time to edit. Put the white-out down, ignore the delete key, give your inner critic a bottle of whiskey (not the good stuff that should be hidden away for November 30th) and set your critic in a locked room with a copy of “War and Peace”.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t trust the white-out.

How do you silence your critic?

Daily Quote

There is a pair of mallards who visit my yard each year. When they arrive, I share cracked corn and perhaps a handful of crackers. I seldom have bread in the house. They arrive before dusk reminding me that at this moment my job is to enjoy their presence. They go where the water flows and let it take them where it will. I remember my ducks as I write and let the story take me where it will.

Where is your story taking you today?
