Pursing Knowledge While Writing – Daily Quote

the-old-adage-is-write-what-you-know.-but-if-you-only-do-that-your-work-becomes-claustrophobic.-i-say-write-what-you-want-to-know.-julia-glass

I have seen experts in their field. They know what they know. It is part of their DNA. But they are also prone to taking their knowledge for granted and they erroneously assume what they know is common knowledge. They assure there is nothing special or unique about their knowledge. It’s the old ‘familiarity breeds contempt’ adage.

It is true for writers as we take our knowledge base as common knowledge. If we can force ourselves to see the big picture, we may gain access to our unique perspective. But we still must overcome inertia. When we chase a new piece of knowledge, a spark replaces the inertia.  The spark is infectious, it seeps into our writing and we write with excitement and emotion. Our reader becomes infused by our quest and the spark spreads.

What do you want to know?

Scientific Discoveries – Friday Fictioneers

Davinia and Leela spent years researching, digging through forgotten archives, searching for clues. Their mission was to locate priceless treasures. Their current site called White City lay at the tip of a once-massive inland basin. A Lake evaporated by the Great Cataclysm.

Discoveries in White City suggested that their ancestors once lived alone, in large spaces within larger cities. The theory sparked heated debates among their colleagues.

“Leela, you’ve got to see this,” Davinia said as she unearthed a plastic box and pried open the lid. Inside, were layers of well-preserved ancient photos.

“They were grey.”

“They looked like us.”

Creating Something to Work With – Daily Quote

i-can-always-write.-sometimes-to-be-sure-what-i-write-is-crap-but-its-words-on-the-page-and-therefore-it-is-something-to-work-with.-geraldine-brooks-

The practice of creating every day teaches many lessons. Sometimes your sessions are loaded with wonder.  You look forward to the writing time, words flow onto the page and the process seems effortless. Other days you don’t want to sit at your desk, but as you type, the concepts fall into place, and you produce more than you would have imagined. Sometimes despite your best efforts, it is nothing but crap.

Discipline makes you strong and you battle through, working and composing until you reach your daily goal. The chances are when you analyze those hard-won pages you find gems you didn’t recognize as you were writing. Truth is, even the words you wrote on a good day may need resuscitation. Regardless, there are filled pages. Words you can edit. Words you can polish and shine to reflect your finest story.

How is your writing discipline developing?

Reading the Signs – #MenageMonday

The message floated as Gawayne read then turned towards Loreena.

“What does it mean?”

Loreena stepped closer, standing next to him, she contemplated the words, a thoughtful expression creased her brow.

“Who are these Knights of Cydonia?”

“Ancient stories tell of a warrior goddess whose sworn duty was to protect her king. She commanded soldiers, knights, into battle under her name Athena Promachos.”

“This part mentions a Muse. What do you make of that?”

“The tales also point to her as a patron of the Arts.”

“That’s odd. Still, they appear to be in danger. They ask for my assistance.”

“So, it would seem.”

“Get me there, but don’t forget the tether line like you did last time.”

Loreena nodded and began chanting the words that would send him to Oracle Arena.

Gawayne felt himself being transported. Passing a door marked ‘Backstage’, he entered the interior of a building larger than anything he had imagined. On a large raised area, dwarfed by its surroundings three men with strange interments milled around.

“What is this place?”

“Cool get up,” one of the men said as he reached to touch Gawyne’s armored shoulder. Recoiling, Gawayne sidestepped his inquisitive fingers.

“Easy,” he said, withdrawing his hand.

“I received a summons. I seek an audience with the Knights of Cydonia.”

“Dude, we’re not Knights. It’s the name of our song. You ready to make a video?”

“What is required?”

“It’s not difficult. Just fake it.”

Gawayne considered the man’s words then drew his sword.

Making Incremental Changes to Surpass Your Goals – Daily Quote

i-work-on-a-word-count-basis-so-i-have-to-write-three-thousand-words-a-day.-i-can-write-them-in-the-morning-i-can-write-them-in-the-evening-as-long-as-they-get-done.-cassandra-clare

I track my productivity on a word count basis. However, my current output is nowhere near three thousand words. Not yet anyway. My present production level is much less than Cassandra’s. When I first began along this path, I was lucky to manage one hundred words. My work was sporadic, and it was rare for me to write on consecutive days.

I have made progress. Now, missing a scheduled writing session is unthinkable. If I skip a day, I make up the difference. My daily word count has tripled and keeps increasing. I surpassed 2018’s total word count during the second week of June. Continuing my trend, within the next two weeks, I will be double what I previously wrote.

I also plan on attempting NaNoWriMo in November which I expect will to add another fifty thousand words to my tally. If I am successful, 2019 may reach triple my word count from last year. It is a feat I never imagined was possible. But it is a testament to the power of small, incremental and regular changes.

What will you attempt today?

Struggling to Find Sweet Dreams – Daily Quote

going-to-the-woods-is-going-home-for-i-suppose-we-came-from-the-woods-originally.-but-in-some-of-natures-forests-the-adventurous-traveler-seems-a-feeble-unwelcome-creature-wild-beasts-

When the going gets tough when the odds seem stacked against us, home is our refuge. Home is our haven, our shelter, the place we heal our wounds and gather the courage to battle and defeat the odds.

We are only human, weak, feeble creatures struggling to make our way. But it’s the struggle that forms the basis for the adventurous. The valiant know the joy of attaining their dream, the satisfaction of reaching for the stars, and the merit in the journey.

How will you fight for your dream today?
